Need an Information about Copy of Tax Return?

Taxpayers have two easy and convenient options for getting copies of their federal tax return information -- tax return transcripts and tax account transcripts -- by phone or by mail.

A tax return transcript shows most line items from the tax return (Form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ) as it was originally filed, including any accompanying forms and schedules. It does not reflect any changes you, your representative or the IRS made after the return was filed. In many cases, a return transcript will meet the requirements of lending institutions such as those offering mortgages and student loans.

A tax account transcript shows any later adjustments either you or the IRS made after the tax return was filed. This transcript shows basic data, including marital status, type of return filed, adjusted gross income and taxable income.

Request either transcript by calling 1-800-829-1040, or order by mail using IRS Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return. The IRS does not charge a fee for transcripts, which are available for the current and three prior calendar years. Allow two weeks for delivery.

If you need a photocopy of a previously processed tax return and attachments, complete Form 4506, Request for Copy of Tax Form, and mail it to the IRS address listed on the form for your area. There is a fee of $39 for each tax period requested. Copies are generally available for the current and past 6 years.

Lost Last Year's Tax Return Copy?

It happens every year. Just when you get motivated to get rolling on your taxes, you realize you can't find the return you filed last year.

First off, don't panic if you can't find the return. Yes, you need it to know what you claimed last year and how those claims relate to this years return. All is not lost, however. The IRS will provide you with a copy of your past tax returns if you ask nicely. Here is how to go about it.

The IRS will not send you the actual tax return. The agency, however, will send you their version of it. This is known as a tax return transcript and is a layout of the information you provided. It is essentially your return, but doesn't look like it. You can rely on the transcript as though it was your original return.

When you contact the IRS to get the transcript, it is important to understand there are two types available. As is usual with the IRS, there are two choices just to confuse you. The first is the tax return transcript that is essentially the return you filed. The tax account transcript is your original return as modified by any changes made by the IRS or you. Which one is the correct one? If the IRS has not contacted you about an issue with the return, it is the tax return transcript. If they have, it the tax account transcript.

The IRS will give you any return for the past three filing years. The service is free. To get the copy, you can call the IRS at 800-829-1040. Alternatively, you can get a copy by filling out and mailing in IRS Form 4506-T. It takes two weeks to a month for the agency to get the copy to you. If you discover you have a problem just before the relevant filing deadline, file for an extension so you don't run afoul of filing laws. Remember, you have to pay any taxes due regardless of the extension, so try to guesstimate what you will owe.

If you lose a past tax return, there is no need to panic. The IRS will be happy to send you a copy. After all, an audit agent probably has the file on their desk as we speak!

How do I get a Copy of Past Tax Return?

The IRS makes copy of tax return available in two ways. You can pay a fee to obtain a photocopy of the return. Or you can order a free, computer-generated transcript from the IRS. You can order a copy of past tax return for any prior tax year, not just the most recent. The IRS does waive fees for photocopies in some situations if you need the tax return to apply for disaster assistance from government agencies.

Step 1
Decide if you need a copy of past tax return, or if a transcript is sufficient. For example, suppose you need your tax return for documentation of income to finance a home. If the lender will accept a transcript, there is little point in paying the fee for a photocopy. As of 2012, the fee per photocopy was $57.

Step 2
Visit the IRS website and print out the appropriate request form. For photocopies, use Form 4506. For transcripts, use Form 4506T. The forms are nearly identical except for a payment information section on Form 4506.

Step 3
Complete the request form. You must provide your name and Social Security number, plus those of your spouse if you filed jointly. Include your current address. If you want to designate a third party as the recipient, provide that party's name and address in the space provided. State the tax year of the return you want, and the type of form you filed.

Step 4
Include a check or money order for photocopies payable to the United States Treasury. Mail the request to your regional IRS Service Center. The addresses of Service Centers are included in the form instructions. Don't forget to sign the request form before you mail it.

Step 5
Place your request by phone, if you want. Call the IRS Customer Service tool-free number, 800-829-1040. Follow the prompts, and the automated system will connect you to a live operator, who will take your order. You need to provide the same information as you do for a mail-in request. However, you must have a credit card or debit card to pay for photocopies.
